Aaron J. Johnson (Music)

Aaron J. Johnson, through his study of jazz and radio is interested in uncovering infrastructure, mechanisms, and mediators that combine to influence the navigation of cultural products from producers to listeners and consumers. Jazz is just one genre of black music and radio only one form of communications network that combine with other resources and actors within larger art worlds that produce, distribute. and support cultural activity. As new media emerge and become increasingly important in the culture industries, controversies and contention embodied in the negotiation or renegotiation of shifting culture industry practices reveal the economic and political advantages perceived by artists and business enterprises alike. Jazz presents an interesting case as its aesthetics make multiple ideological resonances within the hybrid market/noncommercial art world in which it functions. This hybrid structure responds to and delivers compensation to participants in many forms and reveals ideological lines of fracture and compromise.
